Buying a dog is the least of your expenses yet to come. You can get a puppy for $50-1500 dollars, depending on the breed you’re interested in. But this is not where the expenses start to add up. Owning a dog can cost you thousands of dollars. Puppies need food, water, vaccinations and shelter. This can add up over time. And don’t forget about the luxury items we buy our new furry friend. Those doggie clothes, toys, potty training mats, combs, shampoo products, flea treatments and dog beds aren’t cheap either. These expenses add up at the end of the year also. So remember to choose your words wisely when saying buying a dog isn’t cheap. Getting a dog is not that expensive compared to raising one.
Think before you buy a dog. You need to consider its size, exercise activity level, how well they can be trained, if their good with kids, are they protective breeds or shy breeds, and consider how long they can live and where you’re going to raise them.
You don’t want to get an overly large sized dog for a small apartment. This can be too small of an area and they do not have much yard to run in unless you’re going to walk them for 30 minutes a day. Larger sized dogs also eat more than small dogs. Big dogs are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, Great Danes, Mountain Dogs, St Bernard, Grey Hounds, German Shepherds, Husky, Dalmatian, and Collies. These larger breeds can live 6-13 years. As big dogs age they can develop health concerns like hip dysplasia, cancer, Pano, Gastic Dilation, Wobblers, etc. This can be added expenses to raising these breeds as they age.
Smaller breeds will do well in apartment style living. Also, small dogs do not need much exercise to be satisfied. They like to cuddle and will do just fine lying around with you. These breeds often live 5-11 years. Some small dog breeds are Chihuahua, Maltese, Pugs, Bulldogs, Shih Tzu, Weiner Dogs, Yorkies, Maltipoo, Cocker Spaniels, and Pomeranians. Smaller breeds can experience health concerns like Pancreatitis, Brachycephalic Syndrome, Ectropion, etc.
